Where the Illinois River meets the Mississippi, big bluffs rise, eagles circle, and adventure feels baked into the limestone.
Just up the Great River Road, Pere Marquette State Park delivers one of the Midwest’s most dramatic outdoor playgrounds — without requiring a plane ticket or a week off work.
Whether you’re tying into your first sport route, scanning treetops for migrating birds, or settling in for a fireside lodge stay, this nearly 8,000-acre escape makes it easy to build a full weekend outside.
Consider this your quick-start guide to climbing, hiking, camping, and wandering at Pere Marquette.
Get Acquainted
Pere Marquette in Grafton is Illinois’ largest state park, known for its rustic lodge, blufftop views, and prime location along Route 100 on the Great River Road and Meeting of the Great Rivers Scenic Byway. Spanning nearly 8,000 acres, it offers a wide range of outdoor recreation in a dramatic landscape.
Rock Climbing
Since opening to climbers in 2016, Pere Marquette has developed more than 60 routes on highly featured limestone walls. The park favors beginner-to-intermediate climbers, with mostly vertical lines and a strong emphasis on bolted sport routes, plus a small number of trad routes and limited bouldering. Climbing and rappelling are permitted only in the designated climbing area.

Hiking and Birding
Roughly 12 miles of marked trails wind through forests, bluffs, and wildlife habitat, offering scenic hikes for all skill levels. Trails are open from sunrise to sunset; dogs must be leashed and bikes are not permitted. The park is also a premier birding destination, with more than 230 species of native and migrating birds recorded here, including the iconic bald eagle.
Staying Overnight
Built in the 1930s, Pere Marquette Lodge features stone-and-timber construction anchored by a dramatic 700-ton fireplace. The lodge offers 72 guest rooms, dining, and indoor amenities. Campers can choose from an 80-site RV campground with electric hookups, nearby tent camping, or two cabins that sleep up to six.
