Every day across St. Louis, runners gather. They adjust their shoes, stretch and shake out stiff legs, comment on the weather — and when the time comes, whether 5:15 a.m. or 6 p.m., they head out together, holding one another accountable mile after mile.
A group of cyclists is a peloton. A group of swimmers is a pod. There’s no official name for a group of runners, though “crazy” often gets tossed around. Whatever you call them, these groups are multiplying across east central Missouri, mirroring a global surge in popularity.
Strava’s 2025 Year in Sport: Trend Report found that the number of new run clubs more than tripled last year. Google Trends shows searches for “run club” have risen 20% over the past five years. Even celebrity musicians — Diplo, Travis Barker, Gunna, and Jelly Roll — have launched their own clubs. Locally, the greater St. Louis area now boasts more than 40 active run clubs.
Why run together instead of alone?
Research points to powerful benefits. A 2017 study in the Journal of the American Osteopathic Association found that group exercise lowers stress and improves quality of life at levels far beyond solo workouts. A 2024 study showed a strong association between run club membership and improved London Marathon finishing times.

Lisa Williams, who is president of the Metro Milers run club, vice president of the St. Louis Ultrarunners Group, and Missouri state representative for Road Runners Club of America, sees those benefits firsthand.
“Running clubs help people reach their goals by providing accountability, mentorship, and support,” she says. “If they are newer runners, they can learn from the club about training, nutrition, and other aspects of running.”
But fitness isn’t the only draw. The social connection plays a huge role. Strava reports 37% of respondents see run clubs as a good way to meet people.
“I think joining a running club is beneficial for a lot of people because they are able to connect with and make friends with others outside of work,” Williams says. “Also, when it comes to trail running, it can be helpful to be with a group so you don’t get lost. And some women feel safer running with a group, especially when they need to get in a run in the dark.”
While the number of run clubs is growing, challenges still exist. Strava found 27% of women and 20% of men believe run clubs are only for elite runners.
Dispelling that myth is partly what inspired Jason Pippi and their husband to found the run club Three Run Four in 2018. They wanted a low-pressure space where every runner and pace fit in.
“We have four club pillars that are publicly posted and regularly reminded during opening and closing group announcements,” Pippi says. “One of the pillars is that no one runs alone. The community we have built is rooted in support of inclusivity and making sure beginners know we are a safe space to begin their running journey.”

Run clubs provide accountability and consistency, but the health benefits go far beyond physical improvements. According to a 2025 report from the World Health Organization Commission on Social Connection, one in six people worldwide experiences loneliness — a factor linked to an estimated 100 deaths per hour. The same report found that strong social connections can lead to better health and longer life.
For Pippi, that’s the real heartbeat of a run club.
“I think we all crave community and shared experience,” they say. “Getting to share a few miles a week with like-minded friends is important because it gives you space to not only train your body but heal your soul through laughter and connection. So many times, I pull up to a run and don’t want to get out of the car because of the weather or a long day at work. But as soon as I see the first smile and wave of a familiar face, it all melts away, and the miles feel effortless.”
