When the pandemic hit, Kelsey Brough turned to nature as her refuge, seeking solace in the outdoors near her North Carolina home. By the time she arrived in St. Louis in 2021, her passion for kayaking, hiking, and new adventures was strong — but she also wanted to share those experiences with others. That desire led her to launch St. Louis Queer Adventurers.
Today, the group has grown to more than 1,700 members on Facebook, hosting outings that range from hiking and swimming to crystal digging, outdoor yoga, and even bowling. We sat down with Brough to discuss how her love of nature has fostered a welcoming, healthy, and adventurous space for St. Louis’ queer community.
Why did you start St. Louis Queer Adventurers?
I was looking for connection in the queer community and was hoping that there were others out there looking for the same thing. I focused on physical activity because I think it’s so important to get our bodies moving and take up space outdoors.
You and your group have organized a diverse set of outings. How does that process work?
I love trying new things and seeing friends in different environments. So for a long time, I challenged myself to choose activities we hadn’t done before while keeping group favorites in the mix, like hiking and swimming. I always appreciate suggestions from group members, and we’ve set up some really cool events that way, like crystal digging and horseback riding. I want to utilize members more this year to help lead events.
Which events have proven most popular?
Hiking has been the biggest draw because of its simplicity. It allows you to spend time with others, get exercise, and enjoy the outdoors — all without spending money. Our hikes can range from five to 25 people, depending on the time of year, how far away the trail is, and how strenuous it is. For our largest event, we rented a pool and had a pool party and potluck for about 35 folks.
What is your role as administrator?
I think of my role as a planner and support system. I make sure that new events are getting placed on the calendar, check posts to ensure that members are respectful, and connect people when I see that they have common interests. I see a lot of groups that accept bad behavior and intolerant ideals, and that will get you an immediate boot from our group. I get immense joy from bringing people together and seeing people challenge themselves to try new things and open up to others. I am so proud of everyone that has attended an event and put themselves out there.

Why is this group important for St. Louis?
I think the importance of the group has never been as pivotal as it is now, during this political climate. We need safe spaces for queer folks to find connection and comfort, which involves building healthy relationships and habits. This group can support folks looking to do that.
What are your long-term goals?
I would like to collaborate with more queer spaces in St. Louis so that we can support local businesses and pour resources back into our community. I’d also like to plan larger-scale events to include group trips so that people can explore more than they would alone.
