When you think of the most famous “Miles” in history, many come to mind.

Chicago’s Magnificent Mile. Los Angeles’ Miracle Mile. And, of course, the 1999 fantasy crime drama The Green Mile.

But starting this Saturday, you can add a new entrant to that venerable list: the Lou Mile.

Simply put, the inaugural Lou Mile is a one-mile race in Old North St. Louis, starting at 8 a.m. on Saturday, October 17.

But it promises to be much more.

Presented by the popular running group STL Run Crw, the Lou Mile is being billed as a signature St. Louis race experience that will bring people of all ages and abilities together through movement.

It also promises to celebrate St. Louis’ rich culture and history and to inspire healthy, connected communities.

While race registration is sold out, people can still show up, watch the race, cheer on competitors, and soak up the atmosphere.

Post-race festivities will include live music, local food vendors, community organizations, and family-friendly activities, all located near Crown Candy Kitchen (St. Louis Ave and 14th St).

As opposed to a high-stakes, ultra-competitive event, the Lou Mile is designed for runners, joggers, and walkers of all ages.

The main race will start at 8 a.m. at the Griot Museum of Black History at the corner of St. Louis Ave and N. 25th St. It will finish a few blocks east of Crown Candy Kitchen at St. Louis Ave and 9th St.

In addition to the Youth Mile and Lou Mile at 8 a.m., a community walk will start at 8:20 a.m., and a 200-meter dash for kids will start at 9 a.m.

The Lou Mile celebration will then begin in full.

There is even a Lou Mile afterparty planned Saturday night from 8 p.m. to midnight at the Key STL. Cover is $10.

Participating businesses for the Lou Mile include Crown Candy Kitchen, House of Vision, the Daily Drip Coffee Cafe, Central Print Studios, and others.

Sponsors include SSM Health Physical Therapy, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater St. Louis, Dream Builders 4 Equity, Saint Louis Integrated Health Network, Metro St. Louis, and River City Outdoors (publishers of Terrain Magazine).

Ultimately, the Lou Mile is designed to be a celebration of movement, community, and the heart of St. Louis.
