Tucked into Missouri’s southwestern corner where four states converge, Joplin has always been a place that rebuilds. After an EF5 tornado reshaped the city in 2011, locals didn’t just restore what was lost — they reimagined it. The result is a surprisingly vibrant outdoor and cultural hub that most Midwest travelers haven’t discovered yet.

JoMo, as locals call it, sits at the crossroads of the Ozarks, the Great Plains, and Route 66 — a geography that makes for an uncommonly rich weekend. You can paddle a local waterway in the morning, ride singletrack through rugged Ozark terrain in the afternoon, and end the day wandering a downtown full of murals, a bustling brewery, and genuine small-city energy. This isn’t a destination trying to be something it’s not.

Whether you’re a trail-hungry weekend warrior or a slow-travel explorer drawn to authentic Americana, here’s what deserves a spot on your Joplin itinerary.

Parks and Trails

Let ’er rip at MOmentum Bike Park
This one is for all you mountain bikers, whether you’re a seasoned vet or brand-new to off-road riding. Joplin’s 95-acre MOmentum Bike Park opened in 2025 and features 10 miles of variable singletrack, a BMX pump track, progressive jump lines, a skills course, and a kids’ bike playground. Rip through rocky Ozark terrain on trails rated from green to double-black-diamond.

Paddle Shoal Creek
Shoal Creek is an 85-mile tributary of the Spring River, with roughly 45 miles floatable in southwest Missouri before it crosses into Kansas. For a great 15-mile float, start at the headwaters of Shoal Creek at Smack-Out Conservation Access and head downstream to the Cherry Corner Conservation Access. For outfitters, try Wards Waterpark Campground or Zan’s Creekside Campground.

Take a dip below Grand Falls
At 163 feet wide and 12 feet tall, Grand Falls is Missouri’s longest continuously flowing waterfall — a sheet of water spilling over a chert rock ledge into natural wading pools below. Shoal Creek keeps flowing even in dry summers, which is why this spot has been a local swimming hole for generations. Come warm weather, you’ll share the pools with equal parts photographers and kids in swimsuits, all of them grateful for the same thing: cold water and good light.

Hike at a national monument
Located 15 miles southeast of Joplin, George Washington Carver National Monument celebrates Missouri’s most famous agricultural scientist. Guided tours are offered year-round and follow a one-mile trail that crosses a creek, leads to an old homestead, passes a pioneer cemetery, and goes through a restored prairie. The visitor center also features interactive displays about Carver’s life and his many contributions to society.

Get wild at Wildcat Park
With nearly six miles of diverse trails at this 60-acre municipal park, you can literally choose your own adventure. Journey through rare chert glades, discover hidden caves, or enjoy stunning limestone blufftop views of Shoal Creek. Speaking of Shoal Creek, you can also fish or swim in it — or stop by its nature center to see the unique species in the 1,300-gallon aquarium.

Food and Drink

Spice it up at Hackett Hot Wings
This sports bar, located on historic Route 66, offers an impressive menu of Southern-inspired favorites. However, it’s their hot wings that receive the most buzz. With 17 flavors to choose from, it can be hard to pick. But rest easy knowing that you’re about to enjoy some of the best wings in the state, and there’s plenty of cold beer to help cool your palate.

Chow down at Club 609
This historic, Art Deco-designed eatery features an eclectic menu and an expansive selection of house-made cocktails. Be sure to try the chicken Bijan: roulades of chicken breast wrapped in bacon, stuffed with feta and basil, and finished with a balsamic glaze. We also recommend the key lime martini or a sour punch straw cocktail.

Joplin Greenhouse & The Coffee Shop. (Joplin Greenhouse)

Swing into the Undercliff Grill
Is it a cave, a cliff, a restaurant, or a bar? Yes. Built into the side of a limestone cliff, the Undercliff is one of Missouri’s more unique dining experiences. This local favorite features a spacious outdoor patio and snack shack for quick bites, plus a rustic interior for classic burgers and fries. Stop by on a Friday night for live music and the occasional car show.

Embrace the Chaos
Chaos Brewing is Joplin’s first craft brewery, and, man, do they set a high bar. It’s a comfortable community hub with a menu of house-brewed goodness that quenches any thirst. With a dozen beers on tap, ordering a flight is the smart move, though the Origin (a hoppy brown ale) and the Kaos (a tropical pale ale) are perennial favorites.

Grab coffee — and a plant
At Joplin Greenhouse & The Coffee Shop, you can not only select a few locally grown plants but also enjoy house-roasted coffee and espresso drinks. Peruse the greenhouse’s array of flora, then choose from a selection of caffeinated beverages, such as the Ozark Stinger honey latte, the London Smog, or the berry hibiscus lemonade. Oh, and be sure to try the fresh-baked pastries, too.

Where to Stay

Sleep under the stars
Are you pulling a camper, piloting an RV, renting a rustic cabin, or pitching your own tent? At River’s Bend Family Campground, the choice is yours. Located on the shores of Shoal Creek, this 25-acre property offers a natural escape just minutes from downtown Joplin. With a restaurant, disc golf course, and kayak rentals, you might even decide to stay put and stop wandering.

Tiny homes. (Someplace Nice)

Downsize it
If you’ve ever been curious about the tiny home movement, here’s your chance to sample it. Two charming, brightly colored tiny homes sit side by side at this private residence in Joplin. A queen-size bed, couch, full bathroom, kitchenette, and workspace will have you feeling right at home just in a much smaller space. Check out “Someplace Nice” on Airbnb for full details.

Wellness and Fitness

Get in touch with nature
Looking to take your relationship with the outdoors to the next level? You’ll want to check out the Wildcat Glades Nature Group. This nonprofit, based at the Shoal Creek Nature Center at Wildcat Park, offers an array of programs, including free outdoor yoga sessions, guided group hikes, and caving expeditions. But the best part might be their hands-on classes on everything from foraging and nature journaling to caring for native plants and identifying invasive species.

Break a sweat at Train Gym
This fitness center embodies the Joplin ethos, focusing squarely on growing stronger as a group. A CrossFit-style gym, Train offers workout-of-the-day (WOD) regimens and functional fitness classes. Both emphasize breaking out of the ordinary gym experience, keeping your brain and your muscles guessing about what comes next. Workouts focus on compound exercises, mobility, and overall body strength. Let’s get after it!
