Long before opening River City Cycles in St. Charles last summer, Brian Gainer played to his strengths. He loved to ride and race bikes. But he’s always had the soul of a fixer.
A native of O’Fallon, Missouri, Gainer grew up riding the Katy Trail, keeping his bike in his car so he could chase new routes. He insisted on repairing it himself.
When Chris Dial, then-owner of Momentum Cycles (now Trek Bicycle O’Fallon), noticed that Gainer bought an inordinate number of tools, he offered him a job. That’s how Gainer became a mechanic at 18.
Over the years, he honed his craft at Momentum, Big Shark, and Mesa Cycles — earning a quiet reputation among riders who appreciate precision.
“I’ve been seeing him since he was at Momentum,” says long-time customer Mike Keithley, in the shop debating which tires to use for the mud-soaked BT Epic in Steelville, Missouri. “I trust him so much, I followed him here. I’m indecisive, and Brian is so patient.”
That patience has become Gainer’s trademark. While larger retailers in St. Charles County boast bigger inventories, few match his focus on service — custom builds, high-end repairs, 72-hour turnarounds, and paint jobs that feel personal.
His small, tidy shop near Lindenwood University also draws a loyal following from Boeing employees just across the river.
“Besides,” says Gainer, “this is where I grew up and where I wanted to be.”

One $10,000 Parlee gleams on display near his turntable and LP collection.
“Even though I don’t have six of everything,” Gainer says, “I’ve curated it to say, ‘This is what I like, and this is what I stand behind.’”
Instead of selling a bike and swapping out parts later, he’d rather fit a rider first, then build the bike around them.
For now, he’s the only employee, though he hopes to expand this spring and organize group rides to “tap into the community.”
The vacant shop next door has him dreaming about more retail space.
Until then, he’s eager to host Vinyl Nights, inviting customers to bring their favorite albums, drop the needle, and talk bikes and music.
“Come in. Be curious. Ask questions,” Gainer says with a smile. “Listening to music and working on bikes all day is like a dream come true.”
