“Marathon” is in the name, but there’s much more to do during the GO! St. Louis Marathon & Family Fitness Weekend. The epic two days, scheduled for April 8 and 9 this year, attract more than 25,000 participants in 11 races — races for people of all ages and fitness abilities. Here’s a closer look at the available opportunities.
In addition to its signature race, the GO! St. Louis Marathon & Family Fitness Weekend hosts a Half Marathon, Marathon Relay, 7K and 5K run/walk, with T-shirts, great-looking medals, and finish line food and fun for all participants.
The Mature Mile encourages adults 60+ years of age to walk a mile, with participants coming from retirement communities, senior centers and private homes around the region.
Children’s Fun Runs take place in Forest Park and feature four different events for kids ranging from toddlers, who maneuver a short carpeted course, to children 2 to 10 years, who compete in either a 50-yard dash, 100-yard dash or half-mile run.
Three unique youth programs encourage school-age kids to pursue a healthy and balanced lifestyle. GO! St. Louis Read, Right & Run Marathon challenges elementary school students to read 26 books, perform 26 good deeds in the community and run 26.2 miles over 26 weeks. The program culminates with a 1.2-mile run on April 8. In GO! St. Louis Middle School Milers, kids in grades 6 to 8 follow a nine-week training program with the goal of completing the 5K. Runners maintain a log to record their times and monitor their nutrition, and are also urged to complete a community service project. GO! St Louis Students on the GO! prepares high schoolers for the GO! St. Louis Half Marathon. The students follow a 20-week training program that teaches them about goal setting, discipline, improved health and positive attitude.
