We all know weather is notoriously fickle and carrying protective clothing is a must if we’re going to be outside for an extended period of time — yet none of us wants to add needless weight or bulk.

Enter the P.R.O Barrier Lite Jacket from Pearl Izumi, a featherweight garment that packs down small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. Weighing in at a scant 60 grams (women’s medium) or 97 grams (men’s medium), it’s a great go-to for both cool summer nights and breezy fall days.

The 100% polyester construction and Barrier Lite system offer noticeable resistance to wind and water. It won’t help much in a torrential downpour, but you’ll emerge dry and warm from light rain showers. The elastic hem and cuffs seal against a chill. The full-length zipper allows easy-on/easy-off, and the reflective elements provide low-light visibility.

The only con I noted was the form fit, which makes it tug across the chest a bit, but not enough to restrict movement. I like my clothes to be relaxed when running, so I went up a size. Problem solved. Now, it’s so simple to pop this jacket a pocket “just in case,” that I don’t head to the trails without it. $110. pearlizumi.com
