Mountain biking enthusiasts have a new destination in Perryville, Missouri, with the opening of Legion Lake Multi-Use Trail. Spearheaded by Trish Erzfeld, tourism director for Perry County, the project began in 2021 and now makes Legion Lake something of a vibrant hub for outdoor recreation.
The project’s budget was $367,000, funded mainly by a $250,000 Recreational Trails Program grant from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. Trelcru, an Indiana-based construction company, led the trail-building efforts, which began in December 2023.
The new system offers 4.5 miles of multi-use trails that wind around Perryville’s Legion Lake, featuring inner and outer loops through the scenic 57-acre park. Riders can explore three different flow trails — beginner, intermediate, and advanced — that start from a large rock hub. Additionally, there is a pump track and a skills area with obstacles like bridges, rock formations, and rock gardens. These features are designed to help riders of all levels build and enhance their skills.
The trails cater to mountain bikers, walkers, and runners, making Legion Lake a versatile destination for outdoor enthusiasts. A local National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA) mountain biking team, the SEMO Mudcats, has already held practices on the new trails, and team members are enthusiastic about the riding opportunities.
“I like it because it’s fast,” says Harper Bruce, a 12-year-old racer for the Mudcats. “The first part has uphills, but not that big, and the second half is really cool. The flow trail is really fun, not that hard, but has some areas that are difficult.”
Erzfeld says the new trails are part of a broader effort to cultivate a mountain biking culture in Perryville, which has yet to be known for cycling. Plans include hosting educational clinics and events in partnership with local organizations, with the aim of attracting riders of all ages, particularly younger cyclists. Long-term goals include hosting a NICA race, which would bring significant attention to Perryville’s cycling scene.
The park will offer many other amenities in addition to mountain biking. Erzfeld highlighted plans for an overhaul, including a pavilion, new restrooms, picnic tables, and benches. A large kiosk at the trailhead will provide maps and information about the park’s local flora, fauna, and fish species, making it an educational and family-friendly destination.
Whether you’re an experienced rider or just starting out, the Legion Lake Multi-Use Trail — located about 80 miles south of St. Louis — offers something for everyone.
