Here’s a quick tip if you find yourself in the Ozark Mountains this spring: Watch out for giant cave dragons. According to a new streaming series, Lost Monster Files, there has been a recent uptick in sightings of the so-called Gowrow, a 20-foot-long, cave-dwelling reptile with sharp teeth, pointed spikes on its back, and a knife-like tail.
In the series’ sixth episode, “Cave Dragon of Arkansas,” a team of experts in cryptozoology (the study of animals whose existence is disputed) travels to Mountain View, Arkansas, to search for evidence of the Gowrow. This dragon-like beast was reportedly seen by locals as far back as 1880 and studied extensively by the now-deceased founder of cryptozoology, Ivan Sanderson, who can be heard in voiceover during the series (and, for what it’s worth, sounds a lot like British philosopher Alan Watts).

We don’t want to spoil the show in case you plan to check it out, but we will say this: The episode is entertaining, the search takes a few surprising turns, and if you want to believe in the existence of an ancient reptilian predator lurking in the Ozarks, there’s not much in the episode’s 42 minutes that will dissuade you. On the other hand, many viewers will watch “Cave Dragon of Arkansas” and conclude that the legend of the mysterious Gowrow is nothing more than folklore.
In other episodes of Lost Monster Files, which kicked off in 2024, the team of cryptozoologists searches for signs of other animals, including: the Carolina Chupacabra, a dog-like creature in the Carolina mountains; the Thunderbird of Pennsylvania, a large bird of prey purportedly terrorizing a small town near Pittsburgh; and the Kodiak Sea Monster, an apex predator allegedly devouring whales off the frozen coast of Alaska. (We’re guessing episodes on the Loch Ness Monster and Easter Bunny are in the works.)
You can stream all six episodes of Lost Monster Files on Discovery GO, Max, and Prime Video.
