Trailnet, a local nonprofit working to build more bikeable and walkable communities, has announced plans to create a safe, on-street bicycle and pedestrian network in St. Louis. In doing so, Trailnet hopes to achieve three goals: economic development, health and wellness advocacy, and equity and access.

The protected network is modeled on the 8-mile Cultural Trail in Indianapolis, Ind., and would connect the city via east-west and north-south routes. An initial route is being explored while Trailnet and its project partners pursue public and community support.

HOK, a local design and architecture firm, developed two renderings that show a trail on the north side of Olive Street near T.E. Huntley Avenue and a trail on Vandeventer and St. Louis Avenue.

Trailnet said it hopes to build its trail system on right-of-ways to avoid paying costs attached to land procurement. The proposed trail is 12 miles and the third largest trail suggested by the organization. Trailnet also created Grant’s Trail and Riverfront Trail.

The organization said its hopes to begin building the trail network by 2022.
